What FPV means
FPV stands for First Person View. Instead of watching the aircraft from the ground, you watch a live video feed from a camera on the aircraft, usually in goggles. You fly as if you were sitting in it. That is the whole difference, and it changes everything about how the aircraft is built and flown.
Because your eyes are onboard, latency matters more than resolution. An FPV system is tuned for the lowest possible delay between the world and your eyes. A consumer camera drone does the opposite: it prioritizes a beautiful, stabilized, recorded image and accepts more delay in the live preview.
Manual control vs. assisted flight
FPV quads are usually flown in acro (rate) mode, where the sticks command rotation rates and the aircraft holds whatever attitude you leave it in. Nothing levels the aircraft for you. This is why FPV has a real learning curve and why simulators are the standard first purchase.
Camera drones fly in position-hold modes backed by GPS, barometer, and optical sensors. Release the sticks and the aircraft stops and hovers. That assistance is what makes them approachable, and also what makes them feel sluggish to an FPV pilot.
Analog vs. digital FPV
Analog FPV transmits on 5.8 GHz and degrades gracefully: as the signal weakens you get static, but you usually still see enough to fly home. It is cheap, low latency, and interoperable across brands.
Digital FPV gives a far cleaner image and readable on-screen data, but it fails differently: instead of gentle static you can get freezing or a sudden cutout. Digital systems are also more expensive and more tied to one ecosystem. Both are valid; choose based on budget and how much you value image quality over graceful failure.
Line of sight is still a rule
Wearing goggles does not remove the requirement to keep the aircraft within visual line of sight. In practice that usually means a visual observer stands beside you and watches the aircraft while you watch the feed. Know the rule that applies where you fly before you put goggles on.
